From parents

When my son entered the primary grades in school he struggled academically to keep up with his peers. His penmanship was illegible and he read with little fluency. I often heard comments from his teachers that he was “lazy”. After out town conducted a CORE evaluation with inconclusive results, I turned to Ilda for guidance. She tested my son and quickly diagnosed him with a learning disability. Her reports and recommendations were clear and concise. Ilda presented her diagnosis and recommendations to the school system, which were invaluable. She guided me through the process and provided me with the support that was needed to enable my son to receive services for several years. My son is currently an honors student at the high school. He is very successful academically, and no longer needs an individual education plan (IEP) to deal with his learning disability. Without Ilda’s accurate diagnosis, recommendations, and persistence with the school system, he would not be where he is today. I can’t thank her enough for the years of support and guidance.

As parents of a dyslexic child, we have had the extreme good fortune of working with Ilda Carreiro King PhD for the past eight years. Ilda administered testing and diagnosed our daughter at the age of thirteen, providing the missing piece to the puzzle as to why our daughter was unable to learn to read and write while being taught with conventional educational methods.

Through Ilda’s vast expertise in a broad range of areas in special ed, we finally had a direction to take, after years of frustration, both for our daughter and ourselves. With Ilda’s comprehensive evaluation and extensively detailed reports, we were able to secure a spot for our daughter at the Landmark School in Manchester, MA, where she finally learned to read and write using teaching methods tailored to her language based disability. Our only regret is that we did not meet Ilda when our daughter first entered elementary school. Early intervention is key to getting the appropriate education for a learning disabled child. There were so many wasted, frustrating years, which could have been avoided.

Our daughter currently attends community college, and is optimistic about the future. Her love of reading continues today. Without the direction of Ilda, she would have been sentenced to a life of dependence, with no hope for living life in the mainstream.

Ilda has the unique vision of understanding the child as a whole, with her years of experience in many facets of special ed. She is able to piece together an appropriate educational plan, and has been a tireless champion for our daughter. Although Ilda is extremely well educated, she can also communicate with parents and students at their own level. She has run interference with our local school system, with well thought out study plans, always with our daughter’s best interests in mind. Often the learning disabled student gets lost in the shuffle, with educators defending methods that they are comfortable with, even though the student isn’t progressing. Ilda never loses sight of the focus, the well being of the child.

We can’t even bear to imagine what our daughter’s life would be like today without Ilda. Ilda is our champion, guardian angel and friend. Her energy and intelligence, and efforts on behalf of the learning disabled knows no equal. Any child, parent or educator would indeed be fortunate to work with Ilda Carreiro PhD. It was the brightest day of our daughter’s life, when we met Ilda. We are forever grateful.

I have had testing [for my son] through Children’s Hospital, Boston Regional Medical Center, and our town’s public school system. I have dealt with people who did tests and reports that ranged from caring, to clinical, to contradictory, and confusing. None of the reports offered the degree of explanation and helpful recommendations that Ilda’s did. As a parent, I have at times been extremely frustrated and overwhelmed by the language, content and discrepancies of various reports. Ilda has provided me with caring, well-written test results, as well as insightful recommendations and strategies. I can’t thank her enough. I now have the information I need to help [my son] develop the skills he needs to achieve academic success.
